Final Changes

Due to our unexpected snow day, all finals will be held on Monday, December 20 through Wednesday, December 21. Here is the new exam schedule:

  • Monday, December 20th – periods 4, 1 and 2       
  • Tuesday, December 21st – periods 5, 3 and 7
  • Wednesday, December 22nd – periods 6 and 8
Drawing and Painting will have the same exam as has been explained in class. Here are the objectives of the exam drawing:

With the drawing paper provided, draw the still life and cast shadows. Create a full value drawing using either pencil or charcoal. You will be graded on the following criteria. 
  • Composition. Did you take into consideration placement on the paper, the cast shadow, and the negative space? Since you had such a simple subject, did you create an interesting drawing?


  • Value to model form. Did you correctly create a full value scale from 0-9 without too many 0 or 9 areas? How controlled is your transition from 0-9 values?



  • Technique. Did you demonstrate and good understanding of how use the medium you chose to draw the still life with?



  • Perspective. Did you sightlines and measurements to make sure your still life was in perspective and in proportion including the shadows?

Gesture Drawing Journal Assignment

This assignment was handed out on Thursday, December 9.

December 13-16


  • Monday-Thursday: Work on creating a finished gesture drawing with value in an environment.
  • Thursday: Gesture Journal pages due! (you had two days to work on them last week!)


Final Exam Schedule: (You will complete a small drawing in class for the final)
  • Friday, Dec. 17 - 1st Period
  • Monday, Dec. 20 - 2nd Period

VVJournal Assignment: Create 2 full-page spreads (that is 4 half pages if you are counting; or 2 pair of facing half-pages – think that covers it!) using the gestures from our first days of gesture drawing.

  1. Develop the gesture drawings – add clothes and objects for the gestures to hold. Be creative! Have the gestures interact.
  2. Develop a background! Give the figures somewhere to be. Make the background go with the figures and their clothing. Be creative – yes, again!

Materials you can use? Watercolor, tempera, scrap construction paper, india ink (your favorite), charcoal pencils, colored pencils (in the table boxes); tissue paper; magic marker washes. Be inventive!!

Gesture drawing Power Point

This is the power point from Friday's (Dec. 3) class.

December 6 - 10


  • Monday: Continue gesture drawing from models in class. Work on using sightlines to get figure in proportion.
  • Tuesday: Gesture drawing is continued with seated poses and foreshortening. Perspective Journal is due on Ms. Dreher's last day. You can bring in treats to celebrate her last day.
  • Wednesday-Thursday: We will begin drwing longer poses focusing on creating value.
  • Friday: Journal Day! We will work on creating an environment for our gesture drawings in our journal.
VVJournal Assignment: Exploring and Practicing Perspective (Aerial and Linear). This journal is broken down into 3 parts, so you will essentially have 3 complete pages on perspective.   • Tuesday: Work on self-portraits. Adding clothing, background, and "icing on the cake" details. New HW Assignment.

Homework – Beginning on Tuesday November 30 your homework will be to draw 5 boxes from different perspectives, or eye levels. You will need only 1 box (shoe box, cereal box, tissue box, jewelry box, etc) to draw from observation! Place the box on a table, sit in 5 different places for 5 minutes each to draw the box from different perspectives. (Hint: Sit directly in front of the box, Stand over the box looking down at it, Sit on the floor and look up at the box, Turn the corner of the box toward you, etc) Use pen, record the beginning and ending time. Draw for 5 minutes uninterrupted. Remember this is modified contour drawing – all will be in line. Drawings due on Tuesday December 7th .

Studio Projects: Charcoal Self-Portraits

  • Tuesday: HW: 5 socks due today. Mini-lab Assignment-Facial Features Due Today. Use measuring and proportion techniques to work on Charcoal Self-portraits.
  • Wednesday: Work on Self-portraits-proper use of black and white charcoal on gray paper.
  • Thursday: Work on Self-portraits.
  • Friday: Finishing techniques for charcoal self-portraits.

Homework – Beginning on Tuesday November 16 your homework will be to draw 5 Modified Contour Self-portraits. You will need to look at yourself in the mirror because you should be drawing from observation! Use pen, record the beginning and ending time. Draw for 5 minutes uninterrupted. Remember this is modified contour drawing – all will be in line. Drawings due on Tuesday, November 23 .

Mini-lab Assignment – Cut-out parts of large parts of faces from magazines and paste in your journal (these should be as large or larger than life-size). You should cut-out eyes, nose, mouth, ears. You will then draw all of these in your journal on the same page as the pasted image as realistically as possible! Eyes, nose, and mouth should all be from a frontal view. You should have 2 ear drawings, 1 where you can see the whole ear, and another where the ear is partially covered by hair. Due on Tuesday, November 16.

Studio Projects: Color Value Drawings

  • Monday: Continue Color Value Fruit Still-life Drawings on Felt paper.
  • Tuesday: HW: 5 pants due today. New Mini-lab Assignment-Parts of the Face Drawings. Last day in-class to work on Color Value Fruit Still-life drawings (because we're using real fruit!)-Due Friday.
  • Wednesday: Introduce Self-Portrait Proportions and new studio project. Use measuring and proportion techniques to begin drawing portraits.
  • Thursday: Use mirrors and measuring techniques to draw self-portraits.
  • Friday: Color Value Fruit Still-life Drawing Due Today. Work on Self-Portrait Drawings.

Homework – Beginning on Tuesday November 9 your homework will be to draw 5 pairs of socks. You may not finish the entire sock, but you should be looking at all the folds and details and drawing from observation! Use pen, record the beginning and ending time. Studio Projects: Color Value Drawings

  • Monday: Introduce drawing Value using Color. Mini-lab: Color value spheres and practicing new medium-chalk pastels and felt paper. EXTRA CREDIT: BRING IN RED APPLES AND/OR GREEN PEARS FOR FRUIT STILL-LIFE!
  • Tuesday: Journal Assignment Due Today. Homework: 5 Shirts Due today. Review setting up a composition. Complete at least 3 contour sketches of still-life for compositional planning.
  • Wednesday: . Finish value spheres mini-lab and contour composition planning sketches BEFORE Beginning color value still-life drawing on felt paper using chalk pastels.

  • Monday: Should begin breaking down your values today. You set the 0s and the 9s – decide which pencil will give you the best light and dark values. Begin sculpting the objects in value. Don’t get distracted by details. Environments Journal pages are due! Mini-Labs will be graded along with the environment pages.
  • Tuesday: Homework drawings are due. Discuss how to decide what are the best techniques to use for the creating the values on each object.
  • Wednesday: Work on Value Still Life. Next Journal Assignment will be introduced. Students may work on the journal during the value project.
  • Thursday- Friday: Working value project or journal assignments.

  • Monday: Work on Hands. New journal assignment will be handed out. REMEMBER: I removed the "windows" option under requirements.
  • Tuesday: Homework drawings are due. Work on Expressive Hands and Journal.
  • Wednesday-Thursday: Introduce value drawing and discuss different pencil techniques. Complete 6 mini-labs in your Journal by Tuesday, October 12.

DP 1 - Expressive Hands - Project Objectives: Create a 18x24 drawing of hands made through direct observation of expressive poses. Use a dip pen to create a composition with visual movement. There must be more than 5 hands. Craftsmanship counts.

  • Monday: Absolutely last day to work on your tool project in class. Drawing Technqiues Quiz. VVJournals are due.
  • Tuesday: Introduce expressive hands and review outline contours. Discuss project guidelines.
  • Wednesday: Tool drawing techniques are due. Composing the final composite will be discussed. Continue working on hand drawings.
  • Thursday: Continue working hand drawing. Introduce journal entries for contour project.
  • Friday: Work on hand drawings or journal entries.


Homework Assignment: This is the homework assignment we have never completed. Make a 15 minute drawing  of your hand holding a pair of scissors each day. Write the date and beginning and ending times. Use pen. Due on Monday, October 4.


Journal Assignment: Create three double page spreads about contour lines. One spread should be a drawing of a public place or environment, like a classroom. The second spread should be a space you share with someone else, like your table you work at or eat at. The third spread should be a space where only you spend time, like your backpack or your locker. All pages must be created in pen line and completed in color using watercolor, tissue paper, or pastels.

  • Tuesday: All techniques are due - outline contour, stippling, cross-contour, hatching, cross-hatching in pencil, cross-hatching in pen, and value collage are all due. High-contrast will be introduced.
  • Wednesday: Work on journal assignments. 
  • Thursday: Composition Power Point. Begin drawings for final composite piece.
  • Friday: Work on composite pieces and journal pages.

August 30 - September 4 (First Week Information)

DP 1 - Unit 1 Studio Project - A Well-Composed Composite of Drawing Techniques of the Same Object
  • Monday: Choose an object to draw. We will spend some time getting to know your object through blind contour and modified contour.
  • Tuesday: Put your stippling value sphere into your journal with a title and reflect on the technique. Discuss the difference between CROSS-CONTOUR and HATCHING. Mini-lab is to perform both techniques on a portion of your object.
  • Wednesday: Complete the Cross-Contour and Hatching mini-labs.
  • Thursday: Discuss gesture massing with a pencil and then following up with an OUTLINE CONTOUR.
  • Friday: Put all the mini-labs from the week into your journal. Work on the Research Journal assignment.
DP Weekly Homework: Make your "duck" hand, use a pen to draw your hand (fingers facing you). Draw for 15 minutes each night. You should have FIVE drawings to turn in on Tuesday, September 7th.

Drawing & Painting 1 - class this week will go something like this, but since it is the first week there will probably be changes.

  • Tuesday: Pre-drawing of a tool. BRING A PENCIL AND ERASER!
  • Wednesday: Syllabus and Class Expectations. We will set up your class folder (1st - orange and 2nd - purple). You need to have a two pocket 3-prong folder for Wednesday in your class' color. You can purchase your own, or one from me for 35¢ in class.
  • Thursday: What is the purpose of a value sphere and how to make a correct one? Make a value sphere using stippling.
  • Friday: Journaling in Drawing and Painting!
